EAS Seminar: Christine McCarthy (Columbia)
Bio:
Christine McCarthy is the Lamont Associate Research Professor in the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University. She uses laboratory experiments to measure the mechanical properties of Earth and planetary materials (seismic attenuation; elastic, transient and steady-state behavior of ice and rock analogue; friction). Professor McCarthy studies phase equilibria (thermodynamics; morphology and kinetics of solidification microstructures, including eutectic and amorphous phases; equilibrium solid + melt structure) and how the resulting microstructure influence the macroscopic behavior. The application of my work spans from glacial and planetary geophysics (particularly with non-steady state tidal forcings) and to carbon mineralization.
