Baker Institute Seminar Series – Dr. Jennifer Nagashima
Dr. Jennifer Nagashima will be presentating ‘The ARTs of fertility preservation in wildlife’
Jennifer Nagashima is a Research Biologist with Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) in the Center for Species Survival. Nagashima’s research in the domestic dog and cat focuses on expanding understanding of basic reproductive biology to develop biomimetic assisted reproductive technologies. Specific research concentrations include utilizing a microfluidic ovary-on-a-chip to understand the impact of biomimetic gonadotropin hormone stimulation on ovarian cell function, and interrogating the roles of extracellular vesicles in mediating gamete developmental competence. In collaboration with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Red Wolf’s Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) program and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Dr. Nagashima aims to enhance gamete and gonadal tissue cryopreservation and establish non-invasive methods for pregnancy detection. Nagashima earned her bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in animal science in 2009, and her doctorate in Zoology and Wildlife Conservation in 2015.
